4 Lessons from the volcanic ash crisis
Since 2008, it seems to me that writing for this editorial on anything but the state of near-constant crisis in which the aviation industry has lived would put me off message. But as I was already looking ahead to the summer, I thought Europe’s airports would be back to some form of operational and commercial ‘normality’. Alas, this proved to be nothing more than wishful thinking. After the global crisis and a renewed terrorist threat, a volcanic eruption was just around the corner.

Visionary AdR-SEA collaboration to boost Italy’s competitiveness

The Week The Air Stood Still
On 14 April, the hitherto little-known Icelandic volcano – Eyjafjallajökull – began erupting volcanic ash. At first, the situation was viewed as a passing, meteorological inconvenience, but the ensuing threat of air space contamination by volcanic ash soon paralysed 80% of European air space, resulting in the cancellation of more than 100,000 flights and an unprecedented breakdown of European mobility. Ross Falconer & Robert O’Meara report on the shock that no-one saw coming.

Harmonisation key to cohesive security strategy
Security policy remains high on the EU political agenda, with the pressing issue of implementing new rules on LAGs (liquids, aerosols and gels) and the failed terrorist incident on Christmas Day 2009 having reignited the debate on security scanners. Indeed, ACI EUROPE’s recently published Policy Outlook includes security as one of the four key challenges facing Europe’s airports. Philipp Kriegbaum, Chair of the ACI EUROPE Aviation Security Committee, outlined details of the security policy agenda to Ross Falconer.

One bag rule severely impacting retail revenues
The one cabin bag rule being implemented in varying degrees by some low-cost carriers is causing confusion and consternation among travellers and is severely impacting airport retail revenues. Airport Trading Conference: Captivating the consumer
The 19th ACI EUROPE Airport Trading Conference and Exhibition was held in Malta from 26 to 28 April. Taking place in the immediate aftermath of the volcanic ash crisis, the event addressed the impact of European air space being paralysed for six days, alongside industry threats such as World Health Organization (WHO) proposals to ban duty free liquor and tobacco sales, cabin bag restrictions and security issues. SMAG CONFERENCE: Regional Airports come together in Croatia
The 3rd annual ACI EUROPE SMAG Conference and Exhibition was held in Dubrovnik from 15 to 17 March. Hosted by Dubrovnik Airport, with additional support from its sister airport, Zagreb, the event welcomed some 200 delegates from all over Europe. Robert O’Meara reports.

ACI EUROPE is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Annual Assembly, Congress and Exhibition taking place in Milan on 16-18 June. ACI is the only worldwide professional association of airport operators. However, membership is equally open both for airport operators as well as for airports’ suppliers and business consultants.

Durham Tees Valley to receive compensation for bmibaby withdrawal
Durham Tees Valley Airport, which is part of the Peel Airports Group, won a landmark ruling in the UK Court of Appeal in May against bmibaby, relating to the airline’s withdrawal of all services from the airport in 2006. Neil Pakey, Deputy CEO, Peel Airports Group, recounted the details to Ross Falconer.

Allgäu Airport Memmingen: Bavaria’s high-flyer
ACI EUROPE recently welcomed Allgäu Airport to the membership of the association. No other German airport is located higher than Allgäu Airport in Memmingen. The airport is also described as a high-flyer due facts other than its GPS reference points – its rapid growth for example. In 2009, annual passenger traffic increased by 75% to 812,000. The aim of having an economical balanced business was reached within two years of beginning passenger flight operations.

Aena, the Spanish airport operator and air navigation service provider, has a Documentation and Publications Centre (CDP) that provides readers, whether they are familiar with aeronautics or not, with various book collections that approach the fascinating world of air transport, its history, technology, development, as well as other sciences and activities related to this sector.

Italian airport infrastructure subject to major investment

Heavy investment prepares Málaga for rapid future growth
