The re-invention of Brussels Airport - a story of proactive partnership
Recently released figures show that passenger traffic at Brussels Airport grew 7% in 2007 to 17.8 million, thereby exceeding the European average for the first time since 2001. The airport has come a long way since that tumultuous year when the bankruptcy of home carrier Sabena also coincided with investment in major terminal development. New branding, innovative airline relations and a proactive approach to marketing and route development have all contributed to this success, as Wilfried Van Assche, CEO, The Brussels Airport Company, explained to Ross Falconer.

ESRIF to deliver public-private dialogue on security research
The European Security Research and Innovation Forum (ESRIF) is a European strategy group in the civil security research domain that was established in September 2007. Its main objective is to develop a mid and long-term strategy for civil security research and innovation, through public-private dialogue, by 2009. Ross Falconer reports.

Revised EU regulatory framework for aviation security agreed
The European Parliament and Council of the European Union reached agreement on the revision of the regulatory framework for aviation security in January, after lengthy conciliation negotiations. ACI EUROPE has welcomed the news, which paves the way for an overhaul of the 2002 legislation.

Ljubljana expanding to achieve goal of being region’s leading airport
Slovenia’s accession to the EU in May 2004 has stimulated consistent growth at Ljubljana Airport. Throughput reached 1.5 million in 2007 and double-digit growth is expected this year. This success has necessitated significant infrastructure investment, with €135 million earmarked for projects to 2015. It is Ljubljana’s goal that by this time it will be the leading airport in the region, as CEO Zmago Skobir explained to Ross Falconer.

Ryanair announces 25th base at Birmingham International
After choosing Birmingham International as its latest base, Ryanair has announced 20 new routes from the airport and forecasts it will be carrying five million passengers per year from Birmingham by 2013. Italian airports register 10% growth in 2007
Despite the ongoing soap opera that may (or may not) soon determine the future of Alitalia, Italy’s airports reported impressive 10% growth in 2007. This is the fastest rate of growth since 2000, when traffic grew by 12%.

Ultima - ensuring compliance of bird control data records
Scarecrow’s Ultima is a Bio-acoustic bird control unit that autonomously collates compliant data records of any bird control activity. It centres on a vehicle-mounted Tablet PC, GPS receiver and a bio-acoustic processor unit, containing the distress calls of 14 species, loaded to the airports specification. Scarecrow has supplied Ultima to several airports, including Delhi International and Christchurch International, in the 10 months since its launch.

ADR expecting a retail boost
Aeroporti di Roma’s (AdR) retail sales have grown from €190 million in 2004 to €280 million in 2007 across Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino airports. That constitutes a 48% increase, with a 20% increase in spend per passenger across both retail (+23%) and food and beverage (+14%). Andrea Belardini, EVP, outlined details of AdR’s retail expansion and the importance of F&B to Michelle Meineke.

Airport parking - harnessing the internet to drive revenues
The role of pre-booking and the internet in airport parking is currently huge and shows no sign of decreasing. The UK has led the charge – first in call-centre reservations, and now in internet services. “It’s probably no exaggeration to say that in peak season, most people who have parked in long stay parking at UK airports will have pre-booked their space,” said Theresa Hughes, managing director, Chauntry. SSP Finland secures Helsinki-Vantaa contract
SSP Finland has won the competitive tender at Helsinki-Vantaa’s domestic terminal, which will see it operate four airside and landside units, including a restaurant, café and bars. SSP has also announced plans to open a number of additional bars and cafés in the airport’s international terminal. Ross Falconer reports.
