Athens Airport becomes “China-ready” with dedicated app

Athens International Airport, in collaboration with Toorbee, has launched the first app in Greece exclusively for Chinese travellers.

The new ‘AIΑ-Toorbee WeChat Miniapp’ offers Chinese travellers a user-friendly digital environment, in their own language, with Athens becoming one of the first ‘China-ready’ airports in Europe. By simply scanning a QR code available in various prominent airport areas, Chinese travellers can now access comprehensive information about airport services, products and offers, combined with information about the city of Athens.

With more than one billion active users per month, WeChat is the main tool for almost all mobile users in China, while WeChat Miniapp – where AIA’s app is available – has over 400 million active monthly users.

“Athens International Airport, with innovative ideas aiming at constantly improving its services to travellers, worked together with Toorbee, a pioneer Greek start-up, offering the first application in Greece exclusively for Chinese travellers,” says George Demetriades, Director, IT&T Business Unit, Athens International Airport. “Thus, we hope that we can facilitate their airport stay and experience, by offering the possibility of exploring airport services and shopping opportunities, as well as information about the city of Athens.”

George Papachristos, CEO Toorbee, adds: “All of us at Toorbee are thrilled with this strategic partnership with AIA, through the launch of AIA-Toorbee WeChat Miniapp. This collaboration demonstrates AIA management’s innovative spirit and vision to become one of the first China-ready airports in Europe. At the same time, it is a vote of trust for Toorbee’s technological solutions and business model. Our goal is to expand our cooperation with AIA and more European airports.”

Fan Heyun, General Manager Air China/Athens Office, comments: “Comprehensive information in Chinese, for the airport as well as for the city of Athens, is the new, very significant step made by Athens International Airport in its effort to enhance the services offered to Chinese travellers. Through the development of the WeChat Miniapp with the support of Toorbee, information for Chinese visitors is now easily accessible through WeChat, the main tool for almost every mobile user in China. I would like to extend warm thanks to Athens International Airport for all the efforts undertaken for the enhanced facilitation of Chinese travellers –not only within the airport premises, but also in the city of Athens – as well as to Toorbee for making this possible.”
