Glasgow Airport opens £3.3 million east pier extension

Glasgow Airport has officially unveiled the new £3.3 million (€4.5m) extension to one of its three piers. The project has been completed as part of a series of improvements to the main terminal building to accommodate the airport’s growing number of routes and services.

Serving 110 destinations worldwide, Glasgow Airport has recently added another 22 routes, equating to an additional 750,000 passengers each year. The new routes include services to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Las Vegas, Prague, Dubrovnik, Budapest and Bordeaux. Flights to Lublin, Vilnius, Cancun, Barbados, Cuba and Milan are due to start soon.

Work to the east pier includes the construction of a 1,400m two-storey extension, new boarding areas for passengers, and an increase in the number of Code E stands, enabling the airport to accommodate larger aircraft for long-haul services.

Amanda McMillan, Managing Director of Glasgow Airport, and Derek Mackay MSP, officially opened the new £3.3 million (€4.5m) east pier extension.

Amanda McMillan, Managing Director of Glasgow Airport, said: “This year has been a fantastic year with the airport continuing to go from strength to strength. Not only have we launched a host of exciting new routes and services, we have also seen unprecedented growth in our passenger numbers and have also been classified as one of Europe’s fastest growing airports for the first six months of 2015.”

Also in attendance at the grand opening was Derek Mackay MSP, Minister for Transport and Islands, who unveiled a plaque and met with members of the Glasgow Airport team.

Mackay commented: “Glasgow Airport has attracted a number of new long haul services and this development will help build on that success. Not only will it be able to accommodate bigger aircraft, but it will also provide improved facilities for departing passengers.”

Glasgow Airport has now invested more than £25 million (€34m) in enhancing its facilities over the course of the last two years. Among the improvements are a major refurbishment of the international arrivals area, modernisations to the main check-in hall, the landscaping of a new public space, and improvements to the airport’s road network.
