Munich Airport selects new explosives detection system

Morpho Detection has announced a contract with the District Government of Upper Bavaria for the deployment of its high-speed CTX 9800 DSi explosives detection system (EDS) at Munich International Airport.

The computed tomography (CT)-based CTX 9800 will be used to screen all passenger checked baggage – referred to as Level 1 screening – for select high-risk flights. The CTX 9800 will also be used to help Munich Airport prepare for full transition to Standard 3 explosives screening capabilities in accordance with approaching European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) mandates.

Morpho Detection’s CTX 9800 will be used to help Munich Airport prepare for full transition to Standard 3 explosives screening capabilities in accordance with approaching ECAC mandates.

In a statement to Airport Business, the District Government of Upper Bavaria, explained that choosing Morpho Detection’s CTX 9800 was the result of a tender procedure for a CT system that meets EU Standard 3. Alongside meeting this standard, the other key requirement was “national approval by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior”. “Installing and operating Morpho Detection’s CTX 9800 system at Munich Airport will help us gain valuable experience for our future replacement needs,” the statement concluded.

“Morpho is thrilled to continue working with Munich Airport and local aviation security authorities to integrate advanced hold baggage screening capabilities through the deployment of the first CTX EDS in Germany,” Karen Bomba, President & CEO, Morpho Detection, commented. “By reducing false alarms and time-intensive manual inspections of checked luggage, CTX 9800 is delivering on Morpho’s commitment to help airports prepare for approaching regulatory mandates and security challenges.”

She added: “Generally speaking, an ECAC-approved Standard 3 EDS, like CTX 9800, utilises advanced CT technology to automatically detect explosives and clear bags for travel. As opposed to traditional X-ray systems, automation impacts every step of the process, including total footprint, evaluating images, clearing bags and maintenance. Operating CTX 9800 for select flights would help any airport prepare for using a Standard 3 EDS to screen all passenger checked baggage, on all flights.”
