Venice’s Marco Polo Airport handled seven million passengers in 2007. its new long-term Master Plan, developed by SAVE, the airport management company, with the participation of ENAC and local government bodies, addresses the modernisation of traffic connections and new forms of urbanisation that will allow the airport to reach a total of 15 million passengers per year between 2015 and 2020. Architect Foster & Partners, engineer Arup and planner NACO, each confessed that, given the timeframe for Beijing’s new Terminal 3, they thought the task was “impossible”. Yet, a mere four years later, one of the world’s biggest and grandest airport terminals is successfully operational; an example of how fellow airport developments can excel at no sacrifice to speed or style.
