Mobile screening units: an evolution of the security checkpoint
The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) recently ordered nine Mobile Screening Units (MSUs) from German company Contrac for deployment at undisclosed Canadian airports in time for next year’s Winter Olympic Games. The company’s flagship buses have been adapted to enable passengers to be security cleared on their way to the aircraft. Louise Driscoll reports.

Smiths Detection announces TSA order
Smiths Detection earlier this month announced a $21.9 million (€15m) order from the TSA to supply portable liquid detection scanners for its Bottle Liquid Scanner (BLS) programme. The RespondeR BLS detectors, based on Smith Detection’s RespondeR RCI scanner, are tailored to meet specific TSA requirements.

Promoting a single EU Border Control standard
The ACI EUROPE Border Control Taskforce is currently working on an operational paper with a focus on the practical implications that developments in border management have on airports. The paper will provide European airports and authorities with best practices in this field, with operations, passenger satisfaction and financing all topics which will be addressed. US-NL initiative to streamline border processing
On 23 April, the US and the Netherlands formally launched a landmark initiative, known as FLUX (Fast Low Risk Universal Crossing), to open membership of their expedited air travel programmes to citizens of both countries in an effort to streamline entry processes for pre-screened travellers. EC working actively with US, Canada and Australia on LAGs exemption
Singapore remains the only country to have been granted exemption from the rules on the carriage of liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) by passengers transiting at EU airports. The European Commission is in contact with several third countries, however, not all of them have fully understood the requirements to be fulfilled. Revised EU regulatory framework for aviation security agreed
The European Parliament and Council of the European Union reached agreement on the revision of the regulatory framework for aviation security in January, after lengthy conciliation negotiations. ACI EUROPE has welcomed the news, which paves the way for an overhaul of the 2002 legislation.
