Engaging the air-travel consumer through technology and innovation
The 21st ACI EUROPE Airport Trading Conference & Exhibition, hosted by Oslo Airport, took place from 23 to 25 April. The event was attended by more than 350 delegates, highlighting the importance of commercial revenues to airports of all sizes. Airport retail is performing strongly, with global travel retail sales totalling US$46 billion (€37bn) in 2011 – up +17.9% on the previous year. Looking ahead, a further rise to annual sales of US$64 billion (€51bn) is expected in 2015. Indeed, retail remains the biggest source of non-aeronautical revenues for airports. ACI EUROPE figures show that commercial revenues have been resilient amid the global financial crisis, growing by +15% (€2.5 billion) in 2010.

ETRC Alcohol Code of Conduct signals commitment to responsible retailing
The European Travel Retail Council (ETRC) has launched an Alcohol Code of Conduct to promote the responsible consumption of alcohol, and to safeguard and demonstrate the responsible and ethical behaviour of all relevant business operators in duty free and travel retail. Erik Juul-Mortensen, Vice President, ETRC, and President of the Tax Free World Association (TFWA), outlined the strategy to Ross Falconer.

Malta focuses on developing commercial activities
Malta International Airport will host the 19th ACI EUROPE Airport Trading Conference and Exhibition, which takes place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta, on 26-28 April 2010. The airport’s €5 million terminal expansion plan includes an overhaul of the retail, catering and security areas, resulting in significant capacity increases both landside and airside. Having opened in mid-June, the airport expects to see commercial revenues accounting for almost one third of the total business by the end of next year. Louise Driscoll reports.

ADR expecting a retail boost
Aeroporti di Roma’s (AdR) retail sales have grown from €190 million in 2004 to €280 million in 2007 across Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino airports. That constitutes a 48% increase, with a 20% increase in spend per passenger across both retail (+23%) and food and beverage (+14%).
