Muscat Airport preparing for operation of new terminal; Oman Airports to host ORAT conference

Muscat International Airport, Oman’s main hub, is preparing for continued traffic growth resulting from increased economic and tourism activity, and the expansion of national carrier Oman Air. Central to these preparations is investment in the airport’s infrastructure, which is seeing construction of a new terminal. This new facility will have a capacity of 12 million annual passengers in the first phase, 24 million in the second, 36 million in the third, and 48 million in the final phase.

OAMC is organising “The Hive – Building Connections”, an international Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer conference, taking place in Muscat on 25-26 March 2015. The conference forms part of preparations for the operational stage of the new Muscat International Airport, following the completion of construction works.

Alongside this, a new terminal is being constructed at Salalah Airport, the second largest airport in Oman. This envisages an increase in capacity to one million annual passengers. Further expansions to two and six million annual passengers are planned when the demand arises.

Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC) is organising “The Hive – Building Connections”, an international Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) conference, taking place in Muscat on 25-26 March 2015.

OAMC is responsible for the management and operation of Muscat International Airport, Salalah Airport, Sohar Airport and Al-Duqm Airport. The ORAT conference forms part of preparations for the operational stage of the new Muscat International Airport, following the completion of construction works.

“The conference will attract expertise from numerous companies managing the operation of some of the busiest regional and global airports,” D. Khalfan bin Said Al-Shieli, General Manager of Operational Readiness at OAMC, commented. “They will share their experiences and the challenges faced in commissioning new airports, and this will create a good opportunity for us at OAMC to ensure a smooth and efficient transition to the new international airport, and sustaining this success in the future.”

The Hive will bring together regional and global consulting firms and airport management companies that have recently opened new airport projects, as well as the authorities and companies involved in airport management and operation with plans to build new airports or expand existing facilities.

Several international airport operators will participate, and key speakers have been announced from Delhi Airport, Changi Airport and Incheon Airport. International consultants in operational readiness will also take part, including Munich Airport Company, Zurich Airport Company, INECO, ARUP, ADPI, and Airports Council International (ACI).

“The success of any international conference is measured on the quality and the quantity of the participations. Based on that, the ORAT conference has taken the first steps towards success,” En. Said bin Khamis Al-Zidjali, Acting CEO of the OAMC, explained. “The number and the experience of participants has exceeded our expectations and we are still receiving the applications from a number of other organisations who would like to join the experts in the field of civil aviation and operational readiness. The conference will welcome the giants of the civil aviation industry from around the globe, and is already attracting the attention of international media.”
