Swedavia, airport innovator and a rising Scandinavian brand
The division of the LFV Group was formalised on 1 April and has created two strong organisations with the aim of further developing the Swedish aviation sector. The newly established Swedavia manages, develops and promotes the 13 state-owned airports (three of which are in the process of being sold), while LFV is responsible for air navigation services. Torborg Chetkovich, Swedavia’s new CEO, outlined the airport operator’s vision to Ross Falconer.

LAGs restrictions removal – too much, too soon?
As currently mandated by the European Union, the present Liquids, Aerosols and Gels (LAGs) restrictions in place since summer 2006 are due to be lifted in two distinct phases – Phase 1 is from April 2011 and is relevant to passengers originating in non-EU countries travelling to the EU and beyond, Phase 2 is from April 2013 and will be relevant to all passengers travelling within the EU. However, these ambitious plans still have much progress to make, if they are to become a genuine reality on the ground. Robert O’Meara reports.

Calls for decisive action at European Aviation Summit
The European Aviation Summit, organised by the Belgian Civil Aviation authority as part of the Belgian EU Presidency, took place in Bruges on 26-27 October. The principal focus was on competitiveness, with air traffic and air safety, air traffic management and the environment also under discussion. the conclusions were summarised in the resulting ‘Declaration of Bruges’. Copenhagen Airport adapts to low-cost market with new pier
Only a few years ago, primary airports and low-cost carriers (LCCs) were mutually exclusive. With the construction of Copenhagen Airport’s new low-cost facility CPH Go, the Danish capital’s airport is reaffirming that this is no longer the case. The airport’s vice president sales, Carsten Nørland, and vice president communication, Henrik Peter Jørgensen, explained the rationale behind the investment to Andreas Akerman.

ACI EUROPE’s SMAG rebranded as Regional Airports’ Forum
ACI EUROPE established the Small and Medium Sized Airports Action Group (SMAG) in 2006 as a dedicated forum for European airports with less than 5 million passengers per annum. On 18 October, the 12th meeting of SMAG took place in Santiago de Compostela, hosted by Aena. Ross Falconer reports.

Regional airports: catalysts of wealth creation
The 8th ‘OPEN DAYS: European Week of Regions and Cities’ – organised by the EU Committee of the Regions and the European Commission Directorate-General for Regional Policy – took place from 4-7 October. The event is the EU’s largest forum on regional development. ACI EUROPE once again participated by organising a workshop on 6 October entitled: ‘Helping the regions out of the economic downturn: regional airports as strategic catalysts of wealth creation’.

EC Vice President Kallas commends Airport Carbon Accreditation
18 months ago, Airport Carbon Accreditation was launched at the ACI EUROPE 2009 Annual Congress in Manchester. In the face of challenging times, the programme has nevertheless successfully established itself as the standard for carbon management at airports. Robert O’Meara reports.

Airport Exchange 2010 Istanbul, 4-6 October
ACI EUROPE’s Airport Exchange broke new ground in this, its fifth year. Held in collaboration with ACI Asia-Pacific for the first time and hosted by TAV Airports Holding, it took place in the historic city of Istanbul from 4-6 October, bringing together delegates from Europe and Asia. The event was, once again, a resounding success, attracting some 1,500 delegates and visitors.

Results of the World Business Partner Programme 2010
This past year saw the effective re-birth of the World Business Partner (WBP) programme, with the move from central to regional management. Since January 2010, European members of the WBP programme are being coordinated by ACI EUROPE in Brussels. The main objective was to give closer attention to the WBP members of the European continent and re-establish more personal contact with each of them in order to better serve their needs. Implementing Rules for aerodromes to be adopted by end-2013
As reported under ‘EASA News’ in the autumn issue of Communiqué Airport Business, the competencies of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have been extended to rulemaking in the areas of aerodromes (ADR) and Air Traffic Management (ATM)/Air Navigation Services (ANS). It is foreseen that the Implementing Rules (IR) for aerodromes will be adopted by the end of 2013.

GMR embarks on Malé modernisation
